WATERTOWN, MA. -- In conjunction with the World Plumbing Council’s annual World Plumbing Day celebration on March 11, The Plumbing Museum will host an open house honoring industry professionals who contribute to the health and safety of our world through plumbing and sanitation.  Officially recognized by the U.S. Senate, World Plumbing Day occurs on March 11th “every year…everywhere,” and promotes the importance of global access to proper plumbing and sanitation.  Natural disasters such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti or the subsequent tsunami in Japan were recent reminders of the importance of access to clean water and proper sanitation.

As the area’s foremost authority on plumbing, the Plumbing Museum is excited to participate in World Plumbing Day on Monday, March 11, 2013 from 8:00 – 10:00 AM.  Admission to the World Plumbing Day festivities is free of charge, but registration is required.  To RSVP please email [email protected] or call Museum Event Coordinator Linda Veiking at 617.926.2111.  Celebrate World Plumbing Day 2013 at the Plumbing Museum, or at the very least, remember to thank a plumber on March 11th!

While the museum features exhibits about the history of the industry, its event, “Looking Forward, Giving Back,” will focus on the future and the importance of educating the next generation of plumbers. Proceeds from the gala will benefit the non-profit museum as well as support students pursuing a career in plumbing.

Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh will be the evening’s guest of honor.

“We are pleased to help the museum and students who want to join our profession,” said Harry Brett, business manager of Boston Plumbers Local 12. Along with the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors of Greater Boston, United Association Local 12 operates a state-of-the-art training center.

“The gala will also help raise awareness of the museum and our industry,” Brett adds.

“There is more to the industry than many might imagine,” said Hugh Kelleher, executive director of the PHCC of Greater Boston. “And it is rapidly evolving.”

With global warming, extreme weather, and other environmental concerns, water is becoming more of a precious resource. By developing and installing water reclamation systems and other innovations, plumbers are helping to conserve and protect the resource.

Solar thermal hot water systems, another green plumbing initiative, help reduce carbon emissions and also increase sustainability.

In the developing world, plumbing is especially critical. Preventable diseases related to water and sanitation claim the lives of about 3.1 million people annually, most of them children less than five years old. With the installation and maintenance of proper plumbing systems, plumbers can help ensure access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The United Nations has declared an International Decade for Action, “Water for Life,” and has set a world agenda that focuses increased attention on water-related issues.

A limited number of tickets and sponsorships are available for the "Looking Forward, Giving Back" gala and can be purchased by contacting Linda Veiking, museum event coordinator by phone at 617-926-2111 or email at [email protected].
