Coastal Training Technologies Corp. has released a new training program to help companies comply with OSHA’s updated standard on hexavalent chromium. “Hexavalent Chromium Awareness” is available on DVD and video and covers the health effects of hexavalent chromium, the newly reduced exposure levels, engineering controls and the required medical surveillance of exposed employees.
Exposure to hexavalent chromium in the mechanical contracting industry most often occurs during welding of stainless steel. Workplace exposure to hexavalent chromium may cause lung cancer; nose, throat and lung irritation; eye damage; and skin irritation. Exposure occurs via airborne hexavalent chromium dust and via direct handling of solutions, such as industrial coatings that contain the substance.
The updated OSHA standard requires employers to limit eight-hour exposure, perform periodic monitoring under certain conditions, provide appropriate protective equipment to include respiratory protection when needed, and implement good personal hygiene and housekeeping practices.
Additional information is available via an online preview at www.coastal.com or by calling 888/201-6767 to order a free seven-day preview of the training program, which is accompanied by 10 employee handbooks.
