SAN ANTONIO, TX — Associated Builders and Contractors today announced the winners of its annual Construction Management Competition at ABC Convention 2022 in San Antonio, March 15-17. Fourteen teams of undergraduate students from colleges and universities nationwide competed this year, and Colorado State University was named the overall winner of the 2022 competition, with the highest cumulative points in the five competition categories.
Colorado State University placed in the top three in all five categories, which include estimating, project management, quality control, safety and overall, and won first place the project management category. Coming in second place overall, the University of Florida also placed in quality control and safety. Clemson University earned third place overall and also placed in estimating and won quality control. Notably, Florida International University placed first in estimating and safety and second in project management. Additionally, the University of Cincinnati was named the 2021 Student Chapter of the Year.
The four-person teams put their construction project leadership skills to the test by completing the same construction management project. This year’s project focused on construction of a five-story office building in downtown Austin that will consist of four floors of Class A office space, with the opportunity for ground floor retail and/or additional office space.
“ABC’s Construction Management Competition gives students a chance to get hands-on experience in construction while being able to collaborate with their peers,” said 2022 National Chair of the ABC Board of Directors Stephanie Schmidt, president, Poole Anderson Construction, State College, Pennsylvania. “The skills they learned throughout this process will help them achieve their construction dreams, and we are looking forward to seeing the contributions they’ll be making to the industry in the future.”
The 14 teams that participated in ABC’s 2022 Construction Management Competition represented Auburn University, Clemson University, Colorado State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida International University, Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, Pennsylvania College of Technology, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, University of North Florida, University of Northern Iowa, University of Wisconsin – Platteville and University of Wisconsin – Stout.
All participants are active members of the ABC National Student Chapter Network, which connects local ABC chapters to colleges and universities with construction management programs to build the talent pipeline and mentor future leaders of the construction industry.
