In 2021, 77% of builders and 78% of remodelers reported shortages of plumbers in their employ, notes the Home Builders Institute’s 2023 Construction Labor Market Report. This continued labor shortage hinders the plumbing industry’s growth as projects are rescheduled or canceled, or contractors turn down work because they don’t have enough plumbers on staff.
Skilled trade development can upskill employees to take on some of these roles, but that will not be enough to fill the gap in residential/commercial new construction and the retrofit/repair/replacement sector.
