WHITTIER, CALIF. — The International Code Council has hired Shawn Martin as its new Director of Industry Relations in its Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) group.
According to PMG Executive Director Jay Peters, “Since establishing a unit within the Code Council, focused specifically to plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas disciplines, there have been many successes. We have made great strides in developing new relationships and strengthening those that we are already working with to improve our industry. Bringing Shawn Martin on board will dramatically accelerate our progress as we focus on issues concerning sustainability.”
Martin said, “I have watched the ICC become a leader in this industry for sustainable construction practices, codes and standards and this new position at ICC will put me right in the middle of it. It really is a perfect fit.”
Martin is well known and respected within the plumbing industry. Prior to joining ICC’s Plumbing, Mechanical & Fuel Gas, he was the technical director for the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute and holds positions on many important industry committees related to green codes, standards and sustainability issues. He is active in water efficiency, product certification and educating the industry. Martin has been actively involved in the ICC code development process.
Before being hired by ICC, Martin held positions on the International Plumbing Code Technical Committee and the Sustainable Building Technology Committee representing the water section and discipline. He holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering with an emphasis on fluid dynamics.
Martin’s focus will include coordination of the International Code Council’s PMG efforts on green initiatives, supporting regulatory affairs at the jurisdictional level and raising awareness of PMG programs. He will work closely as a staff liaison to the ES-PMG Listing program, including promoting, identifying and collaborating with potential listees. Martin’s experience will be valuable in managing industry committees, task groups, and other activities surrounding the development of codes and standards.
“Although our MOUs and relationships have been very successful, they have also identified many new prospects for growth” said Peters. “Now that we have someone with Shawn’s vision and talent, we will add to our capacity to execute more effectively.”
The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the International Code Council. The International Codes also serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.
