Massanutten Military Academy Begins Major Facility Improvements on Several Campus Buildings
WOODSTOCK, VA – Massanutten Military Academy has teamed up with Linc Services LLC on an energy-efficient project that includes facility improvements on six campus buildings. In addition to helping improve the quality of life for students and faculty, the project is forecasted to save MMA more than $6.7 million in energy and operational costs over the course of 15 years.
The Bundled Energy Solutions project, which is scheduled to begin immediately, will significantly reduce energy consumption in six campus buildings, extend the useful life of equipment in those buildings, and make classrooms and dormitories more comfortable throughout the year. Reductions in energy and operating costs will help pay for the project, which will be financed over the next 15 years. MMA will also be applying for energy grants that will offset some of the project’s costs.
“This project is in keeping with our school’s founding motto, Non Nobis Solum, ‘not for ourselves alone,’” said Craig Jones, Massanutten Military Academy’s Head of School. “Cleaner energy and lower operating costs are great news, as are comfortable working and living areas. What makes this project especially gratifying is its environmental impact and its promise of making our historic buildings more sustainable.”
Among the buildings targeted in this project are Benchoff, Harrison, Lantz and Warehime Halls, as well as Cook & Kitchin Dining Hall and Memorial Gymnasium. Renovations will vary between buildings, to include installation of new high-efficiency lighting, new heating and cooling systems, and centralized control systems; re-commissioning of systems; replacing and upgrading mechanical systems; and incorporating water conservation measures.
“We’ve had tremendous success implementing Bundled Energy Solutions projects with other school campuses and now with economic pressures and environmental concerns the demand for our services is at an all time high. We are very excited about this solution and know it can make a significant and long-term impact for Massanutten Military Academy,” said Jeffrey Buennemeyer, Linc Services vice president, Mid-Atlantic. “With work beginning immediately, a majority of the upgrades are scheduled to be complete by the end of 2010. Students and faculty will begin seeing the benefits of the project right away.”
Linc Services also plans to assist Massanutten Military Academy with securing certification from Energy Star. According to Energy Star, buildings achieving a rating of 75 or higher and professionally verified to meet current indoor environment standards are eligible to apply for the Energy Star certification. Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
