Shapiro & Duncan helps DC Students Construction Trades Foundation build its first house

Shapiro & Duncan Inc. announced that its first housing construction project with Cardozo Senior High School students is complete.
ROCKVILLE, MD -- Shapiro & Duncan Inc., dedicated to providing cutting-edge mechanical solutions, including pre-construction, engineering, construction, design-build, fabrication, installation and maintenance services which provide and promote every step of the building process, announced that its first housing construction project with Cardozo Senior High School students is complete. Shapiro & Duncan, Inc.'s Special Projects department team Project Manager, Don Spinnler and Foreman Billy Littleford completed the HVAC installations working with the students assistance in an on the job training format. "The DC Student Build House is a marvelous innovative idea. It allows young people a taste of the construction industry giving them an insight into a possible lifelong career. Our industry is challenging and at the same time extremely rewarding, but it's not for everyone and getting this practical experience before making a lifelong commitment is an excellent idea," said Shapiro & Duncan Inc.'s Project Manager, Don Spinnler. Shapiro & Duncan's Special Projects Department focuses on projects that are too large for the Service Department or too small for the Construction Department giving clients the complete range of Mechanical solutions. Shapiro & Duncan attended the ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the first house built by the students of the Academy of Construction and Design on Dec. 6, 2012. The house is located at 5734 13th Street NW Washington, DC. The ribbon cutting ceremony attracted a large crowd of supporters including Foundation board members; DC Schools system officials; sponsoring and volunteering company representatives; many tradesman who worked with the students completing the house; Academy staff, teachers and students; the media and many neighbors and passersby. The house three-story house has three bedrooms, two full baths, and half baths. The house will soon be on the real estate market, and all proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into the program for the purchase of the next lot, and construction of the next house. The DC Student Construction Trades Foundation sponsors accredited career and technical education for high school youth and registered apprenticeship instruction classes for industry workers. DC Students Construction Trades Foundation collaborates with school, business and community partners to encourage students to stay in school and graduate with skills they can apply at work, in college study and to build rewarding careers. Partnering with the District of Columbia Public Schools, the foundation provides meaningful teaching and learning experiences for students in the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo Senior High School.  Striving to support student achievement, the organization offers instructional excellence, access to internships, scholarships, post-secondary education, job placement and career opportunities.
