ROCKVILLE, MD. -- Shapiro & Duncan, dedicated to providing cutting edge mechanical solutions -- including pre-construction, construction, design-build, fabrication, installation and maintenance services that promote sustainability at every stage of a building's life cycle -- announced their continuation of support and commitment to A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.

In 2008, Shapiro & Duncan, established a $125,000.000 scholarship for students interested in pursuing an education in Mechanical Engineering. As this year's recipients are being determined, the 2011-2012 school year marks the graduation of the first group of scholarship recipients, who will shortly be entering the workforce as Mechanical Engineers.

Following in their father's footsteps, Sheldon Shapiro and his siblings attended the University of Maryland and became avid fans and supporters of the University. However as Shapiro & Duncan has prospered and grown since its founding in 1976, their attention has turned to supporting the academics. The establishment of the Shapiro & Duncan Endowed Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering will help provide significant opportunities for not only the students of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, but for the mechanical engineering industry at large.

"As our business and industry grows, we need more and more qualified mechanical engineers," says Shapiro. "Given the increased emphasis on energy efficiency and industry trends to comply with the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design recommendations, the industry needs mechanical engineers trained in these areas. Over the years, our firm has hired many Clark School Graduates," explains Shapiro, "They are great assets and in this one small way we can make a difference."

A third generation family-owned business, Shapiro & Duncan has become the Washington, D.C. region's "Mechanical Solutions Provider of Choice" for complex commercial, government and institutional design-build projects that require first-rate performance, work quality and customer service.
