MORTON GROVE, IL — Rony Mejia, a Material Mover at the ITT factory in Morton Grove, Illinois, has received the prestigious Harold S. Geneen Award for his efforts in making extraordinary improvements in peoples' lives.  The Geneen Award is the highest corporate recognition provided to employees at ITT, a multinational, $11 billion corporation with 40,000 employees and dozens of facilities worldwide.

Mejia was recognized for creating and implementing a variety of innovative social out- reach programs that are making a positive difference for people and entire communities in his native country of Guatemala.  Over the last several years, he has formed and led a number of volunteer organizations that provided an ambulance, fire-fighting equipment, hearing aids, medical and school supplies, furniture, clothes, monetary donations and other critical services to underprivileged sections of this Latin American country.

In addition, he recently served as an ITT Watermark volunteer with a group of employees who provided equipment and expertise to bring clean water to impoverished areas of Guatemala. He is also involved with an artistic group that promotes the Guatemalan culture and raises funds in the United States and Guatemala through folk music and Mayan dancing.

The Awards Committee cited Mejia for his involvement in every aspect of the organizations he is involved with, and characterized  it as, “His commitment can be compared to running a small business on an international level.” He was also recognized for applying the ITT principles of Integrity, Respect and Responsibility on a daily basis, both in his job at ITT and in his work with many community service organizations.

Now in its 31st year, the Harold S. Geneen Awards has recognized dozens of outstanding employees around the world who are doing essential things in extraordinary ways.  Rony Mejia and other recipients were honored at ITT’s annual corporate management meeting in New Orleans on February 9, 2010.
