ST. PAUL, MINN. — NewMech Cos. Inc., a CorVal Group company, has received both national and state recognition for its safety performance.

The Associated General Contractors of America Safety Award was given to NewMech in May for its excellent safety record with "Zero Incidence Rate-50,000 work hours." General contractors and specialty and associated members of AGC participated in the AGC Safety program. NewMech Cos. won the award for being more than 25% lower in its recorded incident rate than the other 2,300 contractors who participated.

In addition to the AGC award, on May 11 Timothy Pawlenty, the governor of Minnesota, along with the president of the Minnesota Safety Council, presented NewMech with the "Meritorious Achievement Award" in recognition of excellence in injury prevention performance in occupational safety. The Minnesota Safety Council stated that NewMech is, "making Minnesota a safer place to live."

"With approximately 125 employees in our home office and up to 550 employees each day working throughout the U.S. and Canada, safety is of utmost importance to us and to our clients," said Tony Condon, chief safety officer at NewMech. "For the second year, our company-wide Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is 0.60; this is 40% below the national U.S. average for all contractors. We also continue to maintain an OSHA Recordable Incident Rate that is two-thirds lower than the national average for other contractors in the United States."

All employees are required to attend ongoing safety classes.

"Over the past four years, we have grown substantially," said Paul Jordan, NewMech CEO. "This dynamic expansion of our business has occurred through a continued ability to meet the ever changing demands of our clients by solving their construction needs and providing solutions that are effective and energy efficient. We demand safe practices of all of our employees. We have been in business since 1921 and we self-perform 33 trades. Safety and quality are an essential part of our core competency and culture. Our employees are required to know all necessary safety practices involved with their trade and they must be current on all job-site safety practices prior to starting any job. All of our office staff and senior management are required to attend ongoing safety classes and maintain current OSHA 10 status to be employed at NewMech. With plans for continued growth, safety and quality execution will always be part of our company's operational mandate."
