pope dope? lol also , I have never seen a vacuum relief device on a domestic hot water tank

I thought the same thing. I have no clue what dope the Pope uses. But on pipe you can use pipe dope, Teflon tape, graphite & oil, antiseeze, prem-a-tex and any other thread sealant. Depends on the product that flows through the pipe, the specs in the build & type of pipe used. But, I have never in my 38 years as a pipefitter ever used pope dope.
And, as far a the vacuum device on a hot water tank, I've never saw one on a hot water tank either.

Reasonable questions, I encourage more tests like this, it asks are we really clear on terminology? Another good thing is maybe someone could submit questions and we try to answer. I am not meaning code questions, I mean simple trade questions. Avoiding AHJ variables in the accuracy of the answers.

And, as far as expansion joints are concerned, I was taught many moons ago these were what you put in a line. But, they are not the only things used nowdays. they make a linear expansion joint, which basically is a short metal hose installed in the line to take care of expansion & contracting.
