For the automotive industry, the fall season means new vehicle models arrive at dealerships across the nation. It’s time for contractors to see what the new trucks and vans have to offer. With 2013 models, automotive companies are offering contractors plenty of cargo space and low gas mileage, plus, there are a variety of alternative-fuel vehicles on the market too.

The concept of ground source heat pump technology is not new at all. Actually geothermal heating and cooling has been around for decades, and currently it is gaining more momentum thanks to the manufacturers, associations and contractors that understand all of its benefits. Manufacturers and associations are also educating the industry about geothermal technology via courses, seminars and events for contractors, distributors, engineers and architects.

A historic drought, an increase in water demand along with water shortages, and stormwater runoff, among other factors, are attributing to an increased awareness of rainwater harvesting. To some of the mechanical contracting industry, rainwater harvesting is already a known way to utilize rainwater for indoor non-potable use, and in two states — Texas and Ohio — it is utilized for indoor potable use as well. Already in place in many commercial buildings are rainwater harvesting systems, conserving the potable water supply by tapping into a free natural resource.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh's Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens opened its new Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) building this summer. As the centerpiece of a $23.5 million expansion project at the 119-year-old non-profit conservatory, the 24,350-sq.ft. building will be the largest in operation pursuing Living Building status in the U.S., along with U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum certification and Sustainable Sites Initiative certification.

FORT WAYNE, IND. — WaterFurnace International Inc. donated a complete Synergy3D residential geothermal system for a new smart home in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., for Marine Cpl. Todd Nicely, one of three surviving quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He lost both arms and legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in 2010.
